Government Law College, Ernakulam Kerala

College story authored by Krishna M. Karun, law student from Government Law College Ernkulam

Government Law College Ernakulam was the first law college in Kerala and so the historical importance of the college is celebrated. It was then known as His Highness Maharajas Government Law College. The decision by the Maharaja of Travancore who started this college and his vision must be admired since it became instrumental in creating numerous persons of reputation in different fields.

The main block of the law college is the old legislative hall of Cochin Legislative Council. When the college was shifted from Trivandrum to Ernakulam, the legislative hall became the part of His Highness the Maharaja’s Law College. The institution holds one of the oldest libraries in the country and such vast number of books. The college is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam. Lawyers, politicians, actors and people who proved their mettle in their field after studying in this institution are many. The college has a prestigious list of alumni including K.G. Balakrishnan (the former Chief Justice of India), Mammootty (Noted South Indian Actor), A K Antony (Former Union Defence Minister of India) and Oommen Chandy (former Chief Ministers of Kerala). The institution offer B.A., LL.B, B.Com. , LL.B (Hons), LL.B Degree and LL.M courses.

To pursue my law degree I chose Government Law College, Ernakulum.  I am so fortunate to have had an opportunity to study there.  As law college is very different from other college that offers other courses. I didn’t know about various activities conducted in law school like moots etc. As I am first generation to pursue law in my family so there was no one to guide me. The first year of law school gives me an identity of my very own.

When someone asked what course I was pursuing, I could proclaim that I am a law student with pride. I consider myself to be among the elite group dressed in black and white. The thick heavy books, the bare acts, the case reporters and various legal databases give me the proud feeling of entering into an honourable field so different from the courses and degrees of my peers. The exposure I received from the college is noteworthy. And the faculty in the institution is so supportive and motivating.

The moot court exercises exposed me to the practical aspect of the law. The Moot Court Competitions conducted by the college both inter college wise and intra-college wise enabled me to know about the field in detail. My academic performances was getting better through each semester and this was only through the thorough guidance of the teachers there. We have study centres, online groups for help in legal subjects etc. to ensure that students get all kind of assistance and aid in their studies. We have to start working before semester starts because of 6 different subjects we always have 6 different projects and presentations which takes place at every alternative week and beyond that we had very strict examination schemes. As being a final year law student at Government Law College, this institution not only taught me legal subjects, but also taught me what is life.
